Wellness Talk & Healthy Eats with Chef CC

Thursday, January 18th the PPWC presented a Wellness Talk & Healthy Eats cooking class at the clubhouse. The class was conducted by Chef CC Consalvo, who has over 15 years experience as a personal holistic chef and wellness coach with a focus on anti inflammatory cuisine.

The ladies gathered in the kitchen to watch Chef CC demonstrate the preparation of our lunch which consisted of a flat iron steak, sliced thin, dry rub marinated with a black olive chimichurri over wilted greens, followed by a cherry and blueberry crumble, made with brown rice four and sweetened with maple. Everyone enjoyed their meal.

During the meal, Chef CC shared her overall goal to incorporate simple, healthy lifestyle choices that are doable and support busy lives. Other topics were on nutrition management and kitchen tips.

Everyone was having such a great time that the class went an hour over. It was definitely an afternoon of great conversations, healthy food facts and enjoying a delicious meal!

General Membership Meeting
- Tuesday January 9th

Cathi Ruddy, Cindy Noori, Kathy Later, Robin Weitz, Terri Webb, Gabrielle Gottlieb and Haldis Toppel met in the clubhouse kitchen to prepare a wonderful meal for the members at the last GM meeting.

The menu for the evening’s supper included: Appetizer; Kibbeh al Hammam, Main Course; Huckleberry’s carrot and avocado salad, Whole Food’s harvest couscous, Tamarind roasted vegetables, Haldis’s baked salmon.  Dessert consisted of Dr G’s raw donut holes and almond date ginger snaps.

Everything was delicious and the ladies enjoyed cooking together.

President Cathi Ruddy introduced potential new members who were present, reported on proceeds from home tour, the club’s upcoming events and introduced our guest speaker, PPWC member Dermatologist Dr. Nasreen Babu-Khan. Dr. Babu-Khan spoke about various types of skin health and care, answering questions that members had submitted. Her talk was interesting, educational and fun and included samples!  Philanthropic Director Joanna Curtis closed the meeting with two items of business. First she reminded everyone about our March 10th Rummage Sale.  Donations are needed and welcomed. Second, she presented the Grant Award Presentations and the Ballot for membership voting.  Grant applicants  were listed with their information and grant request for members to review. Then a ballot was handed out for the members to vote. Grants will be awarded on March 6.

It was truly an evening of friendship, fun and philanthropy!

Protect Our Daughter's

Woman's Self Defense Class

On Tuesday, December 12th, the PPWC hosted a self defense class which was presented by Max Impact Martial Arts studio in Pacific Palisades. The one hour workshop taught us that self defense is accessible and approachable for the every day woman. Owner James Gavsie conducted the class with the help from his teaching staff Marjan Rajabi, together they gave hands on instruction and guidance. Everyone that attended enjoyed the class, and some didn't realize how powerful their own inner-strength was. We look forward to hosting another class with James in the new year.

PPWC's 90th Birthday Party Celebrates
 Palisades Seniors over 90

The 90th Birthday Party at the Pacific Palisades Woman's Club is an event without equal. This year over 50 nonagenarians and three centenarians (a 101 and two 103 year olds) attended along with their families and care givers to fill up a guest list of 120 voices singing Happy Birthday.  Generous donations from local business, organizations, and individuals funded the event which was free to all.  Individual birthday cakes graced every beautifully decorated table, piano music by Marie Captain created a loving ambiance, food was plentiful, and above it all, the newly renovated Clubhouse sparkled in its fresh beauty.

PPWC President Cathi Ruddy and the never-tiring organizers Fay Vahdani and Julia Winter spent countless hours preparing to make this a flawless event.  We are already looking forward to next year.

2017 Grant Award Night Recipients

The Pacific Palisades Woman's Club hosted it's annual
Grant Awards Night Tuesday, March 7th, awarding over
$31,000 to charitable organizations in the areas of arts, recreation, beautification, education, community and charitable organizations. Over 70 people representing 19 local on-profits and Club members filled the clubhouse enjoying hors e'oeuvres and desserts prepared by Club members and K Bakery before the award ceremony.

President Haldis Toppel welcomes the crowd and introduces Robin Weitz and Eva Iimo, the Grant Fund Committee who proudly gave out the awards on behalf of the Club. Funds for Grant Night are from the Home Tour proceeds; the Home Tour is the Club's biggest fundraising effort of the year, which takes place every November. Each year the PPWC members decide by vote how the funds are distributed. Over the years, the Club has awarded over $1 million in grant funds.

The 2016 Grant recipients were: Movies in the Park; Palisades Americanism Parade Association; Will Rogers Ranch Foundation; Boy Scouts of American, Cub Scouts Pack 223; Erika Whoitmore Godwin Foundation (griefHaven); Meals on Wheels; Ocean Park Community Center for Pacific Palisades Task Force for Homelessness (PPTFH); Voice for the Animals; Westside Family Health Center; Canyon Charter School Booster Club; Friends of Marquez; Palisaes Enrichment Program; PRIDE Booster Club for Paul Revere Charter Middle School; Lucas Scholars Program (St Matthew's Parish School); Malibu Orchid Society; Pacific Palisades Garden Club; Palisades Beautiful; and the Village Green.

Upcoming Club Events

 A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

Dear Members,

The PPWC needs new chairs. Our old chairs are dirty and mismatched. When placed in the rolling carts for storage, these heavy carts have caused damage to our floors. My next goal as president is to purchase new tables and durable, stackable chairs. The Board of Directors has allocated $6100 from the 2017 Boutique proceeds towards this project, but we will need more money to complete it properly.

I’m estimating the overall cost will be at least $20,000 to purchase appropriate quality and style and number of chairs for the clubhouse. I hope to dedicate the proceeds of our upcoming March 3, 2018 rummage sale toward this project, and a reduction of our mortgage, so take a look around to locate donations.

We are also working on upgrading the sound system for the clubhouse, and will use funds that were donated in the memory of PPWC member Ingrid Vinje for this purpose.

Anyone interested in helping with the selection of chairs, color and style, or just helping to complete these two projects, please contact me.

If you are planning a year-end charitable donation, please consider the Pacific Palisades Woman’s Club for your donation. We will put the donation to very careful, good use. Please contact me in Roberta’s absence between now and the end of the year.
Happy New Year to all!

Cathi Ruddy

PPWC President
